The LightHub installation at the Portland Winter Light Festival highlights community resilience and preparedness when natural disaster strikes. This exhibit features functions that a PREPHub will bring to Portland in 2019 as a new kind of infrastructure designed to operate entirely off-grid during a disaster, providing crucial services that include power, emergency communications and Basic Earthquake Emergency Communication Node (BEECN) cache equipment. BEECNs are places for Portlanders to go to find emergency information and assistance after a major disaster.
The City of Portland, Portland General Electric and Portland State University are partnering on the project with guidance from the MIT Urban Risk Lab. The first PREPHub will be installed on PSU’s campus later this year.
