The City of Portland’s Smart City PDX Initiative would like to engage Portlanders in conversations about surveillance technologies. Come to this class hosted by Free Geek to learn about facial recognition technology and engage in conversation about the potential impacts on people’s lives.
Surveillance technology means any software, electronic device, system utilizing an electronic device, or similar used, designed, or primarily intended to collect, retain, analyze, process, or share audio, electronic, visual, location, thermal, olfactory, biometric, or similar information specifically associated with, or capable of being associated with, any individual or group.
Facial recognition technology is an automated or semi-automated process that assists in identifying or verifying an individual based on an individual’s face. This technology has recently been banned in the cities of San Francisco in May, Somerville, Massachusetts in June, and Oakland this month, due to concerns around privacy and intrusiveness, lack of transparency, gender and race bias; which triggers ethical dilemmas and potential harm in civil rights and civil liberties.
Free Geek is hosting this conversation. The event is free. Please register and get tickets ahead of the event.
